Tournament History
The Stewards of the Chesapeake event was established in 2000 by the MAAGCS in order to develop a primary source of funding to support local research projects, support environmental efforts, and government relations as they pertain to the golf industry. The tournament has also provided a great opportunity for MAAGCS members to invite their club or company officials to participate in the event for the preservation and improvement of both the game of golf and our environment. The tournament has raised over $200,000 since its inception, and proceeds benefit the Maryland Association of Green Industries (MAGI), various Universities, the GCSAA and other groups supporting environmental issues, such as the Chesapeake Bay Foundation.
In 2017 the proceeds from the Stewards of the Chesapeake were used to help fund the Maryland Association of Green Industries. MAGI advocates on our behalf to help endorse the benefits of our industry with local, state and federal legislators. In addition, beginning in 2018 the MAAGCS committed $25,000 over 5 years to The University of Maryland Turfgrass Pathology Research Fund. The purpose of this fund is to support turfgrass research infrastructure, such as campus labs and the Paint Branch Turf Research Facility. The fund also directly supports the turfgrass pathology position.

Douglas Linde Bio
Douglas Linde grew up as a golf course superintendent's son on Wedgewood Golf Course in Allentown, Pa., and developed a love for golf and its playing field at an early age. His career goal to become a superintendent changed upon graduation from Delaware Valley College in 1991. After completing his graduate degrees from Penn State University, Dr. Linde returned to Del Val in 1996 to develop and direct the turf management program.
Dr. Linde specializes in preparing students for a career in the turf industry and is the academic and career advisor for all turf management students. He also teaches several turf management courses, including Golf Course Design and Construction, Land Surveying, Irrigation Technology, and Soils. He also coaches the golf team, advises the Turf Club, and supervises the turf-research facility and putting green on campus.
He received the Distinguished Faculty Member of the Year Award in 2003 and was awarded the 2005 Golf Coach of the Year award for the NCAA Div. III Freedom Conference. Dr. Linde is a golf course and sports field consultant and conducts turfgrass research. While a student at Del Val, Dr. Linde played on the golf and basketball teams. In 1990 he was named an Academic All-American for Golf by the Golf Coaches Association of America and was also an Agricultural Ambassador for two years.

The event is open to all MAAGCS members, their friends, colleagues (club professionals, GMs, board members) and associates at golf clubs in and around Maryland, Washington, DC, and Virginia.
