About the Club
The Mid Ocean Club (MOC) is a highly prestigious private Club situated on 200 acres in picturesque Tucker's Town, Bermuda. Completed in 1921, the Club is one of the world’s finest golf courses and offers unrivaled facilities to a strong international community of members and their guests. The Club became a private members’ Club in 1951 and presents peaceful rolling greens, gorgeous private beaches, and a stunning clubhouse, with a backdrop of the Atlantic ocean.
The “Father of Golf architecture” Charles Blair Macdonald laid out the golf course and it is consistently viewed as a “must play course” for golf enthusiasts, ranking among the top 100 golf courses outside of the U.S. Mid Ocean Club has hosted several major golf events, most notably the 2007 and 2008 PGA Grand Slams of Golf. In the 1950s, leading golf course architect Robert Trent Jones made subtle and restrained improvements. Today, the course has been recognized in Golf Digest's 2018 World's 100 Greatest Golf Courses. Mid Ocean Club is also proud to have hosted the 2007 and 2008 PGA Grand Slams of Golf.
The Mid Ocean Clubhouse overlooks the 18th fairway and houses a main dining room, bar, two private function rooms, men's and ladies' locker rooms and a Golf Shop. There are twenty newly renovated rooms adjacent to the Clubhouse with breathtaking views of Tucker's Town Cove. The Clubhouse is a relaxed and welcoming setting where members meet after idyllic days on the greens to share global golfing tales over a delicious meal.
In addition to incredible golf, Mid Ocean Club has other recreational amenities including magnificent beaches, pool, and tennis, as well as extensive food and beverage facilities and overnight accommodations. The Club has 1,350 members, including 520 non-resident members. Resident members include many multigenerational Bermudians as well as residents and expatriates who are associated with Bermuda’s vibrant financial services industry.
Bermuda has a semi-tropical climate, is located 650 miles off the coast of North Carolina and has a population of approximately 65,000 residents. The island is a self-governing British Overseas Territory, and the economy is dominated by financial services and tourism. There are daily flights between several major East Coast U.S. cities.
Gross revenue exceeds $13 million with Food & Beverage accounts for $2.4 million and annual dues revenue at $7.9 million. The Agronomy payroll is $2.2 with expenses at $697,271. Future capital improvements include a newly constructed clubhouse and beach club as well as a Master Plan for the golf course with noted golf course architect Gil Hanse. The Club’s 18-hole golf course is a par 71 that measures 6,530 yards. It hosts approximately 28,500 rounds annually. The greens are Tifeagle and the fairways, approaches and rough are Bermuda. The golf maintenance staff is comprised of 26 team members. The Club uses Toro Sprinklers for the irrigation hardware, the maintenance facility was built in 2003 and all equipment is owned.
About the Position
This is a unique and wonderful opportunity for an agronomy leader to join a renowned private club with a world-class golf course. The Director of Agronomy reports to the General Manager and will direct all functions related to the maintenance of the golf course, practice areas, beaches, roadways and building grounds and landscaping. The Director of Agronomy will lead the Agronomy Team to ensure outstanding playing conditions throughout the year. This will be done by being a nurturing leader who fosters an open and transparent communication with the Agronomy Team, Members, and Management Team at The Mid Ocean Club.
Compensation will be competitive and commensurate with experience.
About the Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have at least five years as a Superintendent in a high performing and challenging environment. He/she will have a clear understanding of warm season grass management and fertility on an island or coastal environment with a professional career of achievement and employment stability. The next Director of Agronomy will have a track record of private club/resort leadership with identifying, attracting, and maintaining a high-quality agronomy team. It is important that the candidate is capable to lead, manage, train, and mentor staff while also being an ambitious individual who is patient and accountable.
The chosen candidate will be an excellent delegator and motivator with the ability to work effectively with all departments. He/she should be open, positive, and have an accessible style but able to act decisively. It is vital that the next Director of Agronomy have strong organizational skills, be an excellent and proactive communicator, have visible work ethic and a reasonable sense of urgency. The Director of Agronomy will have a passion for course conditioning, the tradition of golf and Bermudian island living. The selected candidate will be educated in Agronomy or related subject matter from a four-year institution.
