    Job Description:

    Ballyhack Golf Club, host of The Delta Dental State Open of Virginia, is 18 holes of link-style golf, similar to that of Old Scotland. We are seeking an Assistant Superintendent to help lead our team. Ballyhack opened in 2009 and is located in Roanoke, Virginia, nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains. According to Golf Digest, BGC is ranked #7 in the state of Virginia and #183 in the United States. Our team will continue to host the Virginia State Open from 2018-2020. Our turf is comprised of Tyee Bentgrass Greens, 007 Bentgrass Fairways and 007 Bentgrass Tees. We strive to promote tournament conditions on a daily basis. Our ownership is determined to improve our rankings as well as its conditioning and has shown that through large scale capital improvements to the club.

    We are seeking a leader who has a firm, fast, and lean mindset when it comes to agronomy and a professional mindset when it comes to the club and its members. This position will develop into a role where all aspects of golf course management can be handled by the Assistant with guidance from the Superintendent and Senior Assistant. Ballyhack is seeking a candidate with strong internship experience. May graduates are encouraged to apply.

    Requires working knowledge of the maintenance of golf course tees, fairways, greens; the seeding and maintenance practices for golf course turf; the planting cultivating, pruning, and caring for plants, shrubs and trees; the characteristics and proper use of various fertilizers and soil conditioners; herbicides and pest control methods and materials; drainage control methods; and irrigation systems, including wells, pumps and automatic controls.

    • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
    • Ability to operate and maintain tools and machines associated with the upkeep of the golf course.
    • Ability to analyze and solve problems; efficiently handle multiple duties under pressure with minimal supervision; work flexible hours as required including nights/weekends.

    Education and Experience

    • Two or four-year turf grass management degree or related field preferred.
    • Minimum two years experience in golf course maintenance crew preferably in a supervisory role.
    • Basic understanding of irrigation system operation/repair.
    • Previous fertilizer, pesticide and herbicide application/calibration experience preferred.
