    THE COUNTRY CLUB of MOBILE

    The Country Club of Mobile, is a member owned, private country club founded in 1899 to provide its members and guests, with a world-class golf, tennis, fitness, and dining experience. Considered one of the finest clubs in the Gulf Coast region, the Club boasts over 300 acres with 27 holes designed by famed architect and Dean of Golf, Donald Ross. The Club's members and their families have enjoyed a long history of excellent cuisine, a warm gracious atmosphere, and Southern hospitality. Surrounded by sweeping hills and Live Oaks, The Country Club of Mobile provides a driving range, putting facility, and a new state of the art teaching facility. The north nine par three and the east and west nines received full renovations by Jerry Pate preserving the history of the Donald Ross Course.

    The Country Club of Mobile offers its’ members a wide selection of amenities. The 100,000 square foot Clubhouse provides both casual and formal dining options as well as private meeting rooms, a barbershop, and a grand ballroom. The 25,000 square foot fitness facility boats sixteen resort style tennis courts, pickle ball courts, a tennis pro shop, a fitness snack bar, state of the art fitness equipment, massage therapist rooms, and locker rooms complete with sauna and whirlpool. The pool facilities include a lap pool, an Olympic size swimming pool, a diving well, and a children’s recreational pool with fountains and a slide.

    JOB DESCRIPTION

    The Golf Course Superintendent (GCS) reports to the Green Chairman and the General Manager. The GCS is expected to provide quality leadership and will lead and manage his/her department to ensure superb golf course conditioning on a daily basis. The GCS is responsible for all day-to-day operations of The Country Club of Mobile golf course and grounds.

    Continuing education, professional development, strong peer group relations and staying at the forefront of research and technology are necessary for success. In addition, the GCS will provide innovative, relevant leadership and will perpetuate and foster an educational culture of developing and producing future turf professionals. The GCS must be a great communicator and have a natural style of “sincere engagement” with members and staff along with a love of the game of golf and a relentless attention to detail.

    INITIAL AREAS OF FOCUS

    • ·        Complete the grow-in of the golf course renovation
    • ·        Ready the East and West TifEagle greens for their first winter
    • ·        Provide exceptional playing conditions
    • ·        Institute a high level of detail work
    • ·        Improve the Celebration fairways on the North nine with a goal of providing full, dense fairways through the season
    • ·        Develop a plan to improve consistency of the Bahia roughs
    • ·        Evaluate and update standard operating and course conditioning procedures to improve and protect the Club’s investment
    • ·        Develop team training and evaluation systems
    • ·        Create an efficient work environment in the golf course maintenance buildings

    CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS

    The ideal candidate will be a Golf Course Superintendent or the First Assistant at a top tier club with a minimum of five years’ experience.

    • ·        Proven history of providing exceptional golfing conditions
    • ·        Strong observational skills, detail oriented
    • ·        A history of successful experience with managing TifEagle or other ultradwarf greens
    • ·        Successful experience with Bermuda Fairways, experience with 419 and Celebration is desired
    • ·        Construction/renovation and grow-in experience
    • ·        Subscribes to sustainable maintenance practices (e.g. firm and fast, sound irrigation philosophy)
    • ·        Solid irrigation management philosophy and practices
    • ·        Strong understanding of soil science and plant nutrition
    • ·        High energy, focused leader
    • Possesses leadership qualities that resulted in quality hiring, high employee satisfaction-proven staff retention, low turnover
    • Experience with consistent mentoring of team members including timely feedback
    • Proven success in developing assistants to promotion
    • ·        Strong relationship builder with a history of excellent relations with their Golf Professional and General Manager
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; listens to and responds to both club members and team members
    • ·        Strong agronomic skills-stays current with advances in turf technology and equipment
    • Understanding of Integrated Pest Management for disease, pest, weed, and aquatic weed control
    • Experience developing standard operating procedures and training programs
    • Strong budget management and forecasting (zero based) skills
    • Technologically savvy and comfortable with basic business, web and irrigation software
    • Experience developing capital equipment replacement plans including the valuation of capital versus lease options
    • ·        Highly organized, efficient multitasker
    • Golfer/student of the game with a sound understanding of ideal playing conditions and a passion for the game
    • High Golf IQ is essential

    EDUCATIONAL AND CERTIFICATION QUALIFICATIONS

    A degree in turf management or related field of study and the GCSAA Certification are preferred.
