    Position: Assistant Superintendent

    James River Country Club

    1500 Country Club Rd

    Newport News, VA 23606

James River is a private Country Club opened in 1932.  The club worked with golf course architect John LaFoy to complete a bunker renovation in the spring of 2019.  Club is currently adding a new fitness center to service its growing membership.  Golf course is comprised of A4 bentgrass greens, celebration bermuda tees, fairways and roughs, and fine fescue in the tree lines.  James River is maintained to the highest standards daily and has thus become popular for championship events including US Amateur qualifiers, Mid-Atlantic Golf Association Championships and VSGA championship events.  The golf and grounds maintenance department is responsible for all grounds on the property in addition to the golf course.  We are also the home of the country’s oldest golf museum.  Golf and grounds maintenance budget is around $950k.

Must be able to perform all jobs on the golf course with emphasis on chemical and fertilizer applications, irrigation repair, water management and course set-up.  Will work closely with the Superintendent and Director of Golf and Grounds Maintenance in making management decisions concerning agronomics, staff scheduling, and all facets of running the department.  Will assist and be responsible for supervision of the crew and ensuring that quality standards are achieved on a daily basis.

Qualified candidate will preferably have or be obtaining a degree in turf management.  Will be able to obtain a VA pesticide applicator’s license within 90 days.  Will have knowledge and appreciation for the game of golf.  Looking for an individual with hands on experience in golf maintenance, someone with a great attitude and someone with a sense of responsibility.
