    Wilmington Country Club is seeking a full-time Plant Health Care Specialist/ Arborist. We are seeking an ambitious self-starter, that has a passion for preserving and caring for the Club’s numerous species of trees, including a nursery and the historic fruit orchard dating back to Henry Francis du Pont. The candidate will join our team of professionals in maintaining the Club’s varying tree and plant collection, on Wilmington CC’s 385 acres.

    This position will involve monitoring, evaluating, and providing the plant health care needs of trees and shrubs. The position is responsible for applying proper pruning techniques, executing removals, and practicing all aspects of tree care as outlined in the ANSI A300 standards while complying with ANSI Z133 safety protocols. Safety is of utmost importance, and past experience with appropriate safety program protocol is preferred. A successful candidate will have a desire for continued learning, professional development and willing to recruit and train student interns. Minimum qualifications include a minimum of 3 years’ experience as an Arborist, and a strong knowledge of plant health care. If an uncertified ISA candidate is selected, Wilmington Country Club will provide support to obtain this certification within the first year of employment. A successful candidate will interact and educate our membership on a daily basis. Candidates must have or be willing to obtain a Delaware Pesticide Applicator License within the first year of employment.

    Qualifications:

    • Understanding of species-specific insect, disease, and cultural practices.
    • Interest in working outdoors year-round, performing manual labor in all weather conditions.
    • A certificate or Associate’s degree in Arboriculture, Forestry, Horticulture, Plant Science, Landscape Management, Environmental Science or a related field OR prior experience working in the tree care industry is preferred but not required.

    Skills required:

    • Must be able to safely operate a chain saw, both on the ground and in the tree.
    • Must have experience in pruning trees using hand saws, pole saws, chain saws, and loppers.
    • Must have skills to remove and lower trees safely.
    • Ability to safely and efficiently operate Genie® TZ™-50 or similar, trailer-mounted boom lift.
    • Can safely operate a chipper.
    • Can load and unload dump trailers with brush, debris, and landscaping materials with equipment.
    • Knowledge of cabling & lightning protection techniques is preferred but not mandatory.

    Job Requirement:

    • Must be physically fit and be able to routinely lift 50 - 80 lbs.
    • You must be able to work outdoors year-round.
    • Plant identification to include monitor, diagnose, and treat insect, disease, and cultural conditions of trees and shrubs, including protection of peach and apple orchard for human consumption.
    • Maintain tree nursery stock for future plantings on property.
    • Properly maintain, prepare and operate all tools and equipment including chainsaws, chippers, aerial lifts and more.
    • Must be able and willing to assist in snow removal and de-icing, Mondays through Fridays.
    • Any and all other duties as assigned.
