Event Overview
This year's MAAGCS Annual Meeting will be held at Rolling Road Golf Club on Tuesday, November 28th. We will have a special guest speaker, year-in-review, golf awards, scholarship awards, annual business meeting & elections, lunch and a beer & wine social.
Special Guest Speaker
Tom Malehorn
Tom is semi-retired but currently working with RhizoSolutions. Tom attended the Pennsylvania State University Turf Management Program and has been active in the golf and turf industry for the past 57 years. In 1977 he was the youngest Golf Course Superintendent of the GCSAA at age 23. Tom has work internationally visiting golf courses in 42 countries.
2023 Soil Surfactant Performance Under Imposed Drought Stress
Drought and extreme temperature influence turfgrass quality and putting green playing surface conditions. The weather is a card golf course superintendents are dealt and must react to. The proper use of soil surfactants can have a direct influence on turfgrass health and resilience during those challenging weather conditions. This presentation will discuss the use of soil surfactants to mitigate heat and drought-imposed abiotic stress of a putting green in a real-world scenario. Treated and untreated creeping bentgrass plots were evaluated for quality, localized dry patch, abiotic stress, color, rootzone volumetric water content, and prevention and recovery of the playing surfaces when irrigation water was withheld during the highest abiotic stress periods. Application rates and intervals, summary of data collected, and results will be presented. Proper application of a soil surfactant accompanied with post-application irrigation represents an effective method to help mitigate abiotic stress and promote optimum putting green surface performance.
