Hosted by

Matt Earhart
Golf Course Superintendent
MAAGCS Secretary

Tournament History

The Stewards of the Chesapeake event was established in 2000 by the MAAGCS to develop a primary source of funding to support local research projects, support environmental efforts, and government relations as they pertain to the golf industry. The tournament has also provided a great opportunity for MAAGCS members to invite their club or company officials to participate in the event for the preservation and improvement of both the game of golf and our environment. The tournament has raised over $250,000 since its inception, and proceeds benefit the Maryland Association of Green Industries (MAGI), various Universities, the GCSAA and other groups supporting environmental issues, such as the Chesapeake Bay Foundation.

Format

Four Person Team Shamble Using 80% handicap – net prizes. All players will tee off, and the best drive will be selected. Each player will play their second stroke from that spot (within one club length, not nearer the hole, you may improve the lie of the selected drive and place the other three remaining balls. You cannot move from rough to fairway or out of a hazard/bunker). Each player will play their own ball down from the selected spot until it is holed. The two low net scores on each hole will count for the team score.

Note: par 3s – everyone will play their own ball until it is holed out. The two low net scores will count | Par 5s – select the best drive, select the best second shot (same rules apply for placing, 1st and 2nd shots on par 5’s), everyone will play their own ball from shot 3 until it is holed out.

Featured Speaker

Hunter Pates, EPA

Hunter Pates is a Life Scientist in the Water Division of EPA Region 3’s office in Philadelphia. In his primary role, he works with the state of Maryland on protecting and improving the water quality of rivers, streams, and watersheds, including the Chesapeake Bay. Recently, he’s been working to grow the agency’s partnership with the golf industry, as part of EPA’s Smart Sectors Program. Hunter holds an MS in Coastal Marine and Wetland Studies from Coastal Carolina University and a BS in Biology from Misericordia University.

In his presentation, he will talk about EPA’s partnership with golf, the health of the Chesapeake Bay, and share examples of how golf course superintendents can be true “stewards” of the Chesapeake.
