    Needwood Golf Course located in Derwood, Maryland is currently seeking a collaborative, driven and enthusiastic Assistant Superintendent to help enhance the daily operations and course presentation of the 18-hole golf course and a 9-hole “executive course”. The position supports Montgomery County Revenue Authority’s ability to operate self-supporting public facilities with a focus on high-quality conditioning and golfer experiences. Needwood is just minutes from Rockville, Olney, Leisure World, Aspen Hill, Gaithersburg and Montgomery Village, Maryland.

    The Montgomery County Revenue Authority (MCRA), created in 1957, is an instrumentality of Montgomery County and a public corporation. The MCRA has two primary functions, one is to operate self-supporting public facilities, and the other is to finance public facilities. On the operations side, MCRA directly manages the Golf Course System (of 9 golf courses) and operates the Montgomery County Airpark.

    Basic Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Reports directly to the Golf Course Superintendent, and manages a team of 10-15 individuals throughout the season
    • Takes leadership role in instructing and coaching staff on daily operations including mowing, water management, course set up, projects and bunker maintenance
    • Applies fertilizers and plant protectants with safety and compliance as a top priority
    • Collaborates with other managers including Equipment Technician to ensure proper working conditions in the maintenance shop facilities and golf course.
    • Develop proper communication channels to check systems, processes and work activities for potential improvements
    • Will actively participate in full irrigation replacement, bunker and tee renovations, drainage installation, practice range re-design and living educational display between 2021-2023.
    • Collects data and tracking information to present informed management decisions
    • Short-term goals and priorities for the Assistant Superintendent:
    • Develop rapport with existing team and begin to develop new team members through cross-training, performance evaluation and consistent coaching
    • Maintain and enforce safety training to encourage a positive workplace culture
    • Enhance daily operations and course presentation through course scouting, moisture management, plant protectant applications and project management
    • Take ownership in team development and recruitment efforts to build a pipeline of empowered, skilled and specialized employees.

    Compensation and Benefits:

    • $55,000-$65,000 salary range
    • Vacation - 80 hours annually with ability to earn up to 160 hours based on years of service

    • 3-5 years of golf course maintenance, turf or landscape maintenance
    • A certificate, associate’s or bachelor’s degree in turfgrass science, horticulture, landscape or similar field is preferred
    • A basic understanding of the game of golf and standard course maintenance practices
    • Maryland Pesticide and Fertilizer license, or ability to acquire within 90-days.

    • Number of round per year - 70,000 (all 27-holes), 40-50% cart rounds
    • Annual Golf Course Maintenance Budget - $686,000
