Opening Remarks

7:30 - 8:30
Steve McDonald, M.Sci, Turfgrass Disease Solutions
“ABW, Chinch Bug, White Grubs- a mixed bag of Scouting and Control for Mid-Atlantic Superintendents”

This one-hour presentation will cover insect pest control in the golf course landscapes for the Mid-Atlantic region.  Over the past few years, golf courses have dealt with challenging insect pests- some new and some old. In 2021, fall armyworms were problematic but very few were observed in 2022.  In 2022, annual bluegrass weevil (ABW) pressure was low but other insect pests like white grubs and hairy chinch bugs were problematic.  The ABW is an extremely destructive turfgrass insect pest that damages fine annual bluegrass and bentgrass.  New advancements in ABW control will be mentioned in detail.  Secondary insect pests like chinch bugs, white grubs, turfgrass ants and cutworm control will be outlined with observations, biology and control options.

8:30 - 9:30
Dr. Christopher Fields-Johnson, The Davey Tree Company
“Tree Conservation for Construction – Soil Care and Irrigation, root zone reclamation, pest and disease causes and controls.”

Urban development and redevelopment often destroy valuable urban forest resources both during and following the construction process, but this does not have to be the case. When existing trees are carefully considered from the beginning of projects and treated as full design features, they can often be preserved in place or moved to a safe location. Modification of grading plans, installation of tree protection fencing, use of aeration matting to protect critical root zones, proper soil care and irrigation, root zone reclamation, and attention to pests and diseases caused by stress will be shown in detail. Strategies for engaging stakeholders and enforcing preservation plans will also be discussed. Preserved trees make an instant, striking improvement to finished projects while generating good will with neighbors and the public. The right strategies and methods will lead to success in protecting and preserving trees.

9:30 – 9:45 am
Morning Break

9:45 – 10:00 am

“MAAGCS Outreach Update”

10:00 - 11:00
Tom Malehorn, Stan Kostka, PhD, Mike Fidanza PhD.
“Soil Surfactants for Improving Turf Resilience to Abiotic and Biotic Stresses and reducing the amount of pesticides used on golf courses”

Wetting agents (soil surfactants) are invaluable tools in modifying how soils and water interact.  Originally, these products were used to mitigate localized dry spot problems in turf.  Over the past decade, research has provided further insight into our understanding of soil water repellency, when it develops, and how it may impact infiltration, flow and rootzone water reserves.  Recent research has broadened our understanding of how these compounds influence not just water use efficiency, but also on rootzone nitrogen retention and plant uptake, and on broader aspects of the interactions happening in the rhizosphere. This presentation will review some of the basic principles on the interactions between soil surfactants and soils as well as provide practical case study examples of strategies to exploit them beyond traditional uses.

11:00 - 12:00
John Mascaro, Turf-Tec International
“Mascaro’s Interactive Photo Quiz - Fertility applications, chemical drifts Issues, and proper handling”

John Mascaro's Photo Quiz article that has appeared monthly in Golf Course Management Magazine since September 2002 and SportsField Magazine since 2006.  The live version of the Photo Quiz is an interactive presentation with questions on what caused a particular turfgrass problem and answers that tell what the problem was and how it was solved.  Photos and situations also involve incorrect fertility applications, chemical drift issues, application errors as well as improperly cleaned spray tanks and unintended material transference on equipment and people. Lessons on how these situations were also corrected and delt with will also presented.

12:00 - 1:00
Lunch Break

1:00-2:00
Bill Kreuser, TurfGrade LLC
“Balancing PGRs, Fertilizer and Management to Maximize Green Performance”

Growth rate, putting green performance and management are all directly related. Changes to a fertilizer program, mixing plant growth regulators, double mowing and adjusting height of cut dramatically change growth rate. How should a golf course superintendent balance management inputs to create consistent putting green performance. This seminar will focus on data collection to guide fertilizer application, PGR application rate and time and cultural management practices. Specific attention will be focused on mixing PGRs and DMI fungicides to manage clipping volume. Additionally, we’ll cover changes in fertilizer and pesticide requirements that result from lowering the height of cut. Finally, connect growth rate management to overall stress tolerance and plant health protection.
