On July 25th, MAAGCS held the annual Stewards of the Chesapeake fundraiser presented by Landscape Supply. Bill Augustin and Country Club of Maryland played host to another overwhelmingly successful event. The day kicked off with a networking registration followed by a great presentation from Joel Weiman of McDonald & Sons. His talk on “Bending” Standards to Maximize Your ROI was extremely informative and well received by the membership. Thanks to Joel for a great morning session.
Following the education was a traditional cookout lunch before heading out to the golf course for the annual golf event. With the forecast in the upper 90s and rain on the radar, there was speculation that the round would not be completed. Fortunately for everyone there was steady cloud cover and a welcomed 15-minute drizzle to keep us cool. The golf course was in exceptional condition, the greens were firm, and the pin placements were challenging. One team was able to take advantage of booming drives, delicate approach shots and hot putters to shoot a remarkable 103 net score in the 4-person Florida Shamble, taking two best balls. Chris Fernandes, Michael Bostian, Scott Wunder and Jeff Snyder lapped the field to win their 2nd title in three years, that last coming at Elkridge Club in 2020. Runners-up were the team of Joe Haskins, Shaun O’Connor, Jeff Rice and Logan Freeman who fired a respectable 120 net.
One highlight of the afternoon was the hole-out by Tom Gosselin from approximately 120 yards for a two, net one on the par 4, #11, the same hole Shaun O’Connor claimed long drive honors in the men’s division with a 336-yard bomb. Katrin Wolfe won the women’s long drive on hole #2 with a 306-yard smasher. Closest to the pin winners were Scott Cornwell, Scott Furlong, Matt Minnich and Josh McQuade.
Following golf was the golf awards presentation and dinner buffet. Once again, Country Club of Maryland knocked it out of the park with a delicious spread and top-notch service for our members. In addition to the golf awards, our presenting sponsor, Landscape Supply, did a raffle for a Yeti cooler swag package. The money raised through the raffle is being matched by Landscape Supply and donated to the tournament fundraising total, a generous gesture, thank you! The winner of the coveted raffle was Ferris Crilly.
A special thank you goes out to our year-long partners and event sponsors for making this a successful event. Their support is the backbone to our fundraising efforts, and we could not put on quality events without their dedication to the association. Please remember to support the vendors that support us. Finally, to all of the players that took the full day to bear the heat and support the event, thank you!
Plans are underway for the 2023 Stewards of the Chesapeake with hopes of announcing the venue and date in the coming weeks. Be on the lookout for updates!
